Nothing undergoes a bigger change than fashion. Petticoat, mini or leggings – many things are in fashion for some time, but soon disappear again. There are only few garments which apparently never go out of style. Without any doubt, a men's shirt is one of those.
The way it is known today, as a casual or elegant garment for men, the men's shirt has only been worn since the 16th century. The 19th century saw the introduction of the continuous button-facing in order to no longer have to awkwardly pull the shirt over one's head.
The original cut of the shirt has not been changed significantly since then. It is only the fabric, the accessories and the collar that have repeatedly been adapted to current fashion.
Around 1600, the early phase of the men's shirt, the so-called choker was in style. That meant high collars that made breathing difficult and thus received their 'violent' nickname. In the 1960s, the spread collar was at its best. In its prime time, the collars were so broad that their tips reached beyond the shoulders.
Today, there are 5 current collar styles. The button-down collar, which is the most widely applied one, is often seen as the standard collar. Apart from that, the spread collar is also popular today, especially with young men. Button-down collars are fixed to the shirt with a button and are quite casual. Shirts with this collar should not be worn with an elegant suit, but rather with leisure clothing. Even today, elegant dress shirts are found with a stand-up collar (choker). Men wearing bow ties especially like the wing collar, which has a very spread angle (acute angle, 45°).

For a long time the men's shirt was a status symbol, as it indicated that whoever was wearing it did not earn his money with dirty, physical labor and was able to afford a clean shirt every day. Nowadays, the shirt is no longer exclusively for the rich - almost everybody can wear it. There are men's shirts in numerous prices ranges and qualities, spanning from discount shirts up to custom-made shirts, which may have no price limit.

A shirt can also be upgraded by its accessories. An elegant tie can turn even a relatively plain shirt into an eye-catcher. In addition, there are tie pins in all forms, sizes and price ranges. Quite often, the cuff links are also suited according to these, but are generally unnecessary with most of the current shirts.
